note to my mother-in-law: this post bears a striking resemblance to the email I already sent you, as I am a hack.

Liam had his first day of preschool yesterday and it went off without a hitch. We packed up his Goldfish crackers and sippy cup into his Cars backpack and listened to a little Dan Zanes on the way. When we got there, one kid was having a total meltdown, the whole kicking-and-screaming-on-the-floor routine, complete with the embarrassed/guilt-tripped parent trying to get him to stand up and go inside. I prayed Liam would not think this kid had some horrible insider knowledge of preschool that would cause such a rebellion and follow suit.

Prayer answered. His teacher, Miss Mary, met him at the door and invited him right in and lo and behold, in he went, without even a goodbye! I stood outside for awhile, debating whether to go in and say goodbye myself. I dont want to be that mom who sneaks off, but then again, going in to say bye would have certainly started a whole drama involving tears and “Mommy come back!”s. So I took the dirty way out.

Lucas and I went to Target and the grocery store and were done with both in all of an hour. It’s amazing what you can accomplish without a three-year-old. Blogging, for instance.

When I came to pick him up, they were listening to music and hitting rhythm sticks together. He was having a great time. I also saw his name on a large piece of construction paper with these weird foam peanuts that stick when you wet them on it. When he came out of class, his teacher said he did great, that he was giving the other kids toys to play with. She sounded completely amazed, as if no three-year-old has ever been so benevolent. Of course, she is right. My child is awesome.

Liam wouldnt tell us much about his day, but we did get him to admit to going outside and riding a tricycle. Add that up with the music, the foamy paper project and the half-eaten bag of Goldfish in his locker, I’d say he had a pretty full morning.

Here is Liam, on the very first day of his academic career. May it not put us too deeply into debt.

Is this not the cutest picture ever? He even has a little bug over his head!

I happened to stumble upon your blog when I was looking at random wordpress blogs. Very funny! We happen to have babies about the same age – mine was born in April, so I enjoyed reading some of your entries. My blog is http://www.livewithfive.wordpress.com if you want to check it out. I read your entry about trying to get pregnant – we had the same situation, very frustrating! Anyways, thanks for the humor in an otherwise very normal baby day :)

3 and in pre-school? Man, I didn’t start until I was 4. Also, Kindergarten confused me because none of the people I was in pre-school with were there.

Does he do full days or half days?

Why did you let him get so big? It hurts me on the inside.

Boy, he really looks like you in that bottom picture. Isn’t it weird when our babies don’t look like babies anymore? It happens overnight, like you put a baby to bed and then the next morning a little boy is sitting where you left your baby. Creepy. :)

It’s SO creepy! Sometimes I just catch him playing, or standing a certain way or saying a certain thing and I think, “He’s a LITTLE BOY.” Sometimes I just can’t believe it’s really him.

Oh, and Tim, he does half-days Mondays and Wednesdays. Then they bump that up for the 4-year-olds. He won’t go to kindergarten with any of his preschool buddies, either. I havent met anyone else who feeds into our elementary school.
